Welcome to Simsalabim!
Simsalabim - Centre des arts du fil is situated in the centre of Lausanne, in a small one-way street called Chemin des Rosiers or Rose Bush Street in English. Simsalabim has a large shop window that lets the daylight in, which makes it very enjoyable to sit and embroider, weave, tat and make lace without too much artificial light. Here you'll find most things you need for your needlework, embroidery, tatting, weaving and lacemaking, and what you can't find can be ordered. Lots of different projects take place in Simsalabim, both coming from students and from myself. Three weaving looms, a spinning wheel, spindles, stranded cotton, carded wool, needles, fabrics and a lot more makes it very cosy at Simsalabim - come and see for yourself!
The workshops are running according to the following opening hours :
- Monday 9 am to noon and 2 pm to 6 pm
- Tuesday 9 am to noon and 2 pm to 6 pm
- Wednesday 9am to noon (from 9th august only)
- Thu, Fri - please call before you come
During school holidays in February, April and October, Simsalabim might be closed, so please check before you decide to come - you might find yourself in front of a locked door...
If you wish to come to Simsalabim from Wednesday afternoon to Friday, please call me before you come. I might be out teaching elsewhere, on a course or just out and about on different errands.
Simsalabim will be closed as follows :
- from Fri 2nd April to Mon 5th April 2010 (Easter)
- from Mon 10th May to Mon 17th May 2010 (further education)
- from Mon 28th June to Fri 6th August 2010 (Summer holidays)
My name is Marina Berts and I run Simsalabim:
Simsalabim offers you the following tuition :
- different embroidery techniques, Goldwork, Stumpwork, Silk Shading, Blackwork, Whitework, Crewel, Canvaswork, Bayeux embroidery, free-style embroidery, cross-stitches and more traditional needlework
- bobbin lace, needlelace and tatting
- weaving and tablet weaving
- carding and spinning (both spindle and spinning wheel)
- needle felting
- mounting your embroidery
- basics in tapestry weaving
Both beginners, intermediate and advanced students are welcome to Simsalabim for the technique of their choice. All will find the help and support needed either to learn the basics of a technique or to develop new projects.
The Workshops (Mondays and Tuesdays) invite you in for further discoveries in the world of needlework and bobbin lace. You may come at whatever time is best for you and stay as long as you feel is right. One day you might need help with your Silk Shading, another it will be your bobbin lace that gives you a headache. Whatever your technique is, you are always welcome on Mondays and Tuesdays. Since the Workshops are open to all, you will probably meet other people working on different projects and in different techniques, which might be fun for you to watch. Sounds exciting, don't you think?
Courses are organised on request, for example a Saturday or an evening might be dedicated to tatting or felt making. The groups are in general small, no more than 3-4 people, but up to 12 people can be accepted to a course. If private tuition seems more attractive to you, or if you wish to come with a friend to learn more about needlework, then an 'à la carte' course would be the best solution for you. You will find more information about the courses and the Workshops here.
A part from lots of new things to learn, Simsalabim also offers you creations and different products. You can order for example a handwoven fabric or a piece of needlework you would like to give a person dear to you. Handmade items for birthdays, weddings and other occasions are very much appreciated by most. You don't have time to make a present yourself? Then 'Simsalabim' is the right answer!
